Description

An extremely rare early gilt dialed ‘Officially Certified Chronometer’ (OCC) Rolex Explorer 1016 from 1960.

This watch features a very rare dial that up until a few years ago collectors were not even certain existed.

We had known about the Rolex GMT Master 1675 with the rare ‘OCC’ dial as a few of these had already surfaced – a rare transitional dial that fell between the ‘OCC’ dial of the Model 6542 GMT and the new ‘Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified’ (SCOC) dial of the model 1675 GMT. Logically speaking there was every chance Rolex may have done the same with the move from the OCC dial of the 6610 Explorer to the SCOC dial of the new 1016 Explorer…

It has since been discovered that they did and that there is a very rare variant of the 1016 Explorer with this OCC gilt dial. So far in my research I have only found 4 complete examples. All have exactly the same gilt dial printing and thin 3-6-9 numbers, all have a case back stamped IV.60, all have the newly introduced 1560 movement and all have a serial number falling in the 596,000 range.

This watch is one of them, it was serviced by Rolex UK last year and has a stunning deep gloss dial with gilt writing.

What makes it a little bit more special is that it’s serial number is only 200 off the Rolex Explorer 1016 watch owned and worn by Ian Fleming as he wrote his James Bond novels…..it probably was made the same day!

All in all a pretty rare little gilt dialed Rolex watch!!

UBER RARE Rolex 1016 Explorer ‘OCC’ Gilt Dial

Dial & Hands: Stunning extremely rare OCC gilt dial with deep reflective gloss and crisp gilt writing. The dial has a tiny tiny scuff under the number 9, probably less than 1/2 a mm but can be seen at certain angles depending on the light. Other than that it is one of the best OCC dials I have seen.

Case & Caseback: Case is nice and thick and not overly polished like many 1016s. Model and serial numbers are all clear between the lugs. Case back is stamped IV.60 as it should with various service engravings.

Bracelet: Comes on a later Rolex 78360 oyster bracelet as shown.

Movement: Original non-hacking early Rolex 1560 movement serviced by Rolex UK in 2013 and is keeping very good time.

Box and Papers No original box or papers. Will come with certificate of Authenticity and brand new Rolex suede carry pouch.
