love gilt dials.
It’s impossible not too in my opinion if you are a true vintage Rolex fan.
That deep gloss, crisp gilt writing and puffy lume sums up all that is great in vintage Rolex watches for me.
And this one could very easily be the best gilt dial watch I’ve ever seen.
The gloss is 100% perfect with NO imperfections, scratches, marks or anything else.
The gilt writing is beautiful.
The big 3-6-9 numbers of these latter gilt 1016 Explorers are spectacular and the matching tritium hands finish it off nicely.
The gloss is so deep you can even see the reflections of the tritium INSIDE the hands with my cheap camera.
This is one of my favourite gilt Rolex of all time but alas it sits in the bank vault not seeing much daylight as I have another earlier gilt explorer that is my ‘wearer’. A change of plans this year for the collection means I may let this go….
A 1966 watch with the cool vi 66 1016 caseback, original Bucherer 66 papers and the tightest 67 dated 6636 expansion bracelet you’ve ever seen. Original huge superdome crystal and all numbers clear between the lugs.
There are not many of these and most that ever come up seem to have average to poor dials.
This is the only late gilt explorer I have ever kept for myself over all the years.
It won’t be a bargain, but then perfection never is, however it is very possibly the best…and the best stuff is always what makes the best investments over time.
Plus the Explorer will always be the first watch to the top of Everest!
I’m probably making a huge mistake but it won’t be the first or the last time….
